Dear 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and parents,
The Accelerated Reading Program is ready to begin. For those of you unfamiliar with “AR” it is an optional reading program used to encourage students to read. Students move through the program at their own pace and monitor their progress on the computer.
How it works:
Students read a book from the AR book list. They then take a short quiz on the computer in their classroom to determine comprehension. They are awarded points if they achieve a score of 60% (5-10 questions) or higher for easier books, and 70% or higher for the more difficult books (10-20 questions). Students can check their progress on the computer and updates will be done by a volunteer.
There will be some rewards given for point levels achieved, however, we aim to make reading the reward itself. The goal is to get students excited to read and see how well they comprehend what they read by taking a quiz on the classroom computer following the completion of a book. A quiz can only be taken one time for each book. Therefore, we encourage parents and teachers to be sure students are choosing appropriate books for their reading ability.
New to the program this year is the Nativity of Mary Book Club. It will be hosted monthly by Mrs. Long, Mrs. Zenk, and Mrs. Woychick. We invite students in grades 3-5 to join us over lunch/recess to talk about books, give reviews, and share in the excitement of reading.
Lastly, the AR program is looking for donations of new chapter books. The books should be at the reading levels for 3rd-5th grade students. We would like to give a book as a reward to those students who reach a certain level of points in the reading program. Any questions or donations can be directed to Mrs. Zenk.
Thank you!!
