Science
Britannica Science System Foss modules uses a hands-on approach to learning science.
Science is taught half the year in six
week sessions that alternate with social studies.
Topics include:
Insects - Students examine mealworms, waxworms, painted lady butterflies, and other insects to learn about their appearance and structure . They conduct experiments to study their behavior. They also learn about insect habitat and their life cycle. Students use library resources to study an insect in depth. The unit culminates with a visit to Wood Lake Nature Center to collect and learn about bees. Dinosaurs - Students will learn about fossils, different dinosaur species, and theories behind the dinosaurs' extinction. Balance and Motion - In Balance and Motion students study balance and counter-balance and stable and unstable objects. Next, students study the motion of objects such as tops and spinners. They conduct experiments with moving objects on slopes, and use half-tubes to explore gravity and momentum by creating roller coasters for marbles. Weather and Air - In Weather students make or
use instruments to take
readings of the temperature, wind direction, wind speed and rainfall.
They learn about the three main cloud types, and about storm safety. In
Air, students conduct experiments that show that air takes up space, has
pressure, and causes resistance. They make mini-parachutes and make and
fly kites.Weather websites: Atmosphere Research The Weather Dude Tracking Weather   Weather Information
