The rallies follow the release of a series of disturbing hidden-camera videos which document how Planned Parenthood has been harvesting the remains of aborted children so that they can be sold for research. Many of the rally cries were aimed toward ensuring better regulation of Planned Parenthood, calling for an investigation of their practices, promoting true compassion for women in crisis pregnancies, and putting an end to tax-payer funding of the organization.
At one point in the rally, one of the promoters asked for a show of hands – “How many of you here today have never attended a pro-life demonstration before?” From where I stood it appeared that almost half of the people in attendance raised their hands. When the promoter asked next, “How many of you in attendance were born after 1973 (the year in which abortion was made legal in our country), again it seemed that nearly half those in attendance raised their hands.
There seems to be a growing consciousness for the pro-life cause, especially and encouragingly, among young people. I pray that through the prayers and efforts of a new generation all callous and impersonal attitudes toward human life, in the scientific world and among all people, would be replaced with tenderness and wonder-filled veneration.
I also was encouraged by listening to testimonies and meeting people who had been struggling with abortion’s painful after-effects but now have come to know healing and a profound encounter with the mercy of God. There are many good, safe, non-judgmental, confidential organizations, such as Rachael’s Vineyard and Silent No More, which are helping people to overcome despair, hurt, and isolation and are renewing them with hope, peace, dreams, and possibilities.
There is another rally, “Rally at the Governor’s Mansion,” planned for Wednesday, September 9, from 4:00-5:30 PM at 1006 Summit Avenue in St. Paul.
God is calling us all to believe in the promise of ever more abundant life. Keep holding the gift in your heart.
